SUMMARY:Allan Clayton and Kate Golla Reprise A Winter's Journey
DESCRIPTION:If you missed their much lauded Australian tour in 2022\, internationally-acclaimed tenor Allan Clayton and acclaimed pianist Kate Golla are back with their unique performance of Franz Schubert’s A Winter’s Journey (Winterreise). \nAfter triumphant performances in Australia\, Clayton and Golla performed this song-cycle at London’s Barbican Centre. Now\, Musica Viva Australia and Opera Australia are delighted to present another chance to hear this incomparable duo in a production which will tour nationally from 13 February to 3 March\, 2026. \nA Winter’s Journey is a powerful intersection of music\, storytelling and visual art. Award-winning director Lindy\nHume\, videographer David Bergman (Sydney Theatre Company’s The Picture of Dorian Gray) animates digital screens with works from the late Australian artist Fred Williams. \nWinterreise is an emotionally-charged Romantic era song cycle written by Franz Schubert. Using the poems of the German writer Wilhelm Müller\, Schubert creates an emotional journey of a man trekking across frozen rivers and snowy landscapes\, lamenting his lost love. \nFrom a linden tree\, an icy river to a malevolent crow\, each passing feature becomes a character in the drama\, triggering old memories and new hope. And throughout\, Schubert’s exquisite writing for voice and piano paints the emotional and physical surroundings in sound. Musica Viva Australia Artistic Director\, Paul Kildea said\, “Fred Williams’ entire output is a journey through the Australian landscape and\, just as Müller and Schubert redefine the individual\, alone in nature\, Williams helps us understand and re-imagine our vast terrain. His sun-beaten landscapes offer no more comfort than the snowy panoramas evoked by Schubert and Müller. Instead\, they celebrate the timelessness and universality of these artists’ great work.” \nOpera audiences will recall Allan Clayton’s indelible performance as Hamlet in Brett Dean’s eponymous opera in Sydney last year and at the Adelaide Festival in 2017. Clayton has received a multitude of prestigious awards\, including The Queen’s Commendation for Excellence and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. Most recently\, he was awarded the 2025 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for his role in Festen at The Royal Opera. \nPerformers:\nALLAN CLAYTON tenor/ KATE GOLLA piano/LINDY HUME AM director/DAVID BERGMAN visual design/MATTHEW MARSHALL lighting design \nThe program: SCHUBERT Winterreise\, D911 (1827) \nMusica Viva Australia is presenting the performances in Brisbane\, Adelaide and Perth in association with Opera Queensland\, State Opera of South Australia and West Australian Opera. \nDATES AND TIMES \nPERTH Regal Theatre\, Subiaco Friday 13 February\, 7.30pm\nMELBOURNE Melbourne Recital Centre Monday 16 February\, 7pm\nTuesday 17 February\, 7pm\nBRISBANE Concert Hall\, QPAC Thursday 19 February\, 7pm\nSYDNEY City Recital Hall\, Sydney Sunday 22 February\, 7pm\nMonday 23 February\, 7pm\nCANBERRA Llewellyn Hall\, Canberra Friday 27 February\, 7pm\nADELAIDE Adelaide Town Hall Tuesday 3 March\, 7.30pm\nFor more information\, visit https://www.musicaviva.com.au/awj \n\nTickets to A Winter’s Journey in Melbourne & Sydney will be available as part of both Opera Australia and Musica Viva Australia subscription packages. \nOpera Australia subscribers can book from 5 August\, with tickets to single performances on sale from 16 September. \nTo book a Musica Viva Australia subscription\, or tickets to another city\, visit Musica Viva Australia. \nRead our interview with Kate Golla. \nRead our review of the 2022 recital of Winterreise.

SUMMARY:The Marais Project Pays Tribute To Tommie Andersson
DESCRIPTION:The Marais Project presents The Fantastical Life of Daniel Solander\, a tribute to Swedish-Australian lutenist\, Tommie Andersson. \nThis special event curated by The Marais Project\, is a tribute to the wonderful career of Swedish-Australian lutenist and guitarist\, Tommie Andersson\, and the huge and fantastic life of the great Swedish naturalist\, Daniel Solander. Solander was the first Swede\, and the first university trained scientist to tread Australian soil. This scientific Viking was also the first Swede to circumnavigate the globe. Solander arrived on the Endeavour in 1770 under James Cook and sailed the entire east coast of Terra Australis. \nCelebrating in music and words the 250-year friendship between Australia and Sweden\, the program consists of rarely heard Swedish folk tunes and baroque music from the time of Solander\, along with songs by Sweden’s ‘National Poet’\, Carl Michael Bellman\, also known as ‘The Swedish Schubert.’ The concert specially features two songs by the Australian colonial era composer\, Isaac Nathan\, whom some call the Father of Australian Music. The famous Australian conductor\, Charles Mackerras\, is a descendant of Nathan. A musical ‘Acknowledgment of Country’ by First Nations’ musician\, Troy Russell\, commissioned by Jenny Eriksson\, is an integral component of this event. \nDrawing on the unique insights of Tommie Andersson\, gambist\, Jenny Eriksson who also has a Swedish heritage\, and singer Susie Bishop\, who speaks Swedish\, the show was first heard to critical acclaim on Australian Digital Concert Hall. The performance was subsequently broadcast across Scandinavia with the support of the Australian Ambassador to Norway\, Iceland and Denmark\, and the Swedish Ambassador to Iceland\, a nation Solander visited in 1772. \nThis rare and diverse music is artfully intertwined with selected readings from the journals of James Cook and Sir Joseph Banks that describe the strange\, ‘upside down’ world that expedition members encountered as the Endeavour moved north from New Zealand to Botany Bay\, Cooktown\, and beyond. \nTickets $50/$35/20 \nBookings \nRead our review of Two\, an album from The Marais Project featuring Jenny Erikson and Tommie Andersson. \n  \n\,

SUMMARY:Sydney Art Quartet Presents Colour Music
DESCRIPTION:The Sydney Art Quartet presents Colour Music\, a venture into the connection between colour and music\, sight and sound. This exploration of the phenomenon of ‘synaesthaesia’ features a series of world premieres by Sydney based composer Nicholas Vines\, juxtaposed with Haydn’s String Quartet in D minor\, Op. 76 No. 2\, “Fifths” (1797)\, his Piano Trio No. 34 in B-Flat Major\, Op. 36 No. 3 (1794) and one of the pioneers of modern Australian painting\, Roy de Maistre. \n\n\n\nComprising violinists Thibaud Pavlovic-Hobba and Anna Albert\, viola player Andrew Jezek and cellist Andrew Hines\, the performance by the SAQ will be introduced by Steven Miller\, the former head of the National Art Archive at the Art Gallery of New South Wales\, who will be joined on the podium by composer Nicholas Vines to discuss art\, music and composition. \nDe Maistre was fascinated with colour therapy administered to shell-shocked soldiers by putting them in rooms painted in soothing colour combinations. He developed his theory of colour harmonisation based on the relationship between colours of the spectrum and notes of the musical scale and also the manner in which the colours within a room could impact upon the human psyche. \nTwo concerts\, 2 pm and 5 pm \n\n\n\nFree composition masterclass at 4pm \nTickets $80/adult\, $20/student/child \n

SUMMARY:Luminescence Chamber Singers Garden of Earthly Delights
DESCRIPTION:Luminescence Chamber Singers’ Garden of Earthly Delights draws a garden teeming with temptation and desire\, grotesque creatures and improbable scenes of surrender: the uninhibited world of Hieronymus Bosch’s 500-year-old triptych De tuin der lusten. \nBaffling his Dutch contemporaries and the casual tourists in Madrid’s Prado in equal measure\, not to mention generations of art critics\, Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights is ever-enigmatic. Whether it is interpreted as a paradise of indulgence or as a stark warning about moral decay during a time of rapid change\, this art exudes dread and seduction in equal measure. \nLuminescence Chamber Singers comprises Artistic Director and mezzo-soprano AJ America with sopranos Michelle Ryan\, Rachel Mink\, bass-baritone Alasdair Stretch\, tenor Dan Walker and bass Lucien Fischer\, under Artistic Mentor Roland Peelman AM. turn this surreal feast of the senses into an aural tapestry as pleasurable and perilous as Bosch’s vision. Drawn from the vaults of Renaissance raunch\, Medieval monasterial excess and daring modern transgressions\, Garden of Earthly Delights offers a vocal cornucopia of surprise and surreptitiously cheeky delight. \nProgram to include music by Josquin\, Banchieri\, Gallus and new works by Nicole Murphy and Archie Tulk. \nBookings

SUMMARY:Bach Akademie Australia Presents The Art of Violin
DESCRIPTION:Bach Akademie Australia presents The Art of Violin featuring violinists Rafael Font and Simone Slattery with violinist and Artistic Director Madeleine Easton and the Bach Akademie Australia. \nThe violin concerto has taken its place as one of the most popular and exciting genres of all music. At the end of the 17th century\, the violin as we know it was born\, with Stradivarius amongst others creating masterful instruments that continue to be played today. Italy was alive with excitement for the violin\, and this fever spread to its European neighbours\, with the Baroque violin concerto serving as stimulus for both violin technique and repertoire development\, raising the profile of both performer and composer and rivalling opera in popularity. This program shines a light on how German\, Italian and French composers interpreted this genre with concertos by Telemann\, Leclair\, Handel\, Vivaldi and Bach performed by Artistic Director Madeleine Easton\, Rafael Font and Simone Slattery. \nThe program: Vivaldi Violin Concerto RV 208 in D major\, ‘Il grosso mogul’/ J.M. Leclair Violin Concerto No.1 Op.7 in D minor/ G.F. Handel Violin Concerto in B flat major HWV 288/ G. Telemann Violin Concerto in A minor TWV 51:A1/ J.S. SUMMARY:Teodor Doré Performs Rachmaninoff Variations
DESCRIPTION:Teodor Doré\, pianist and composer makes his Sydney Opera House debut with his program Rachmaninoff Variations alongside his own compositions. \nCrimean-born and London-based\, Doré premiered the Rachmaninoff Variations at Carnegie Hall last January and now performs them for Australian audiences for the first time. It is a bold and deeply personal reimagining of Rachmaninoff’s music\, praised internationally for its emotional power and originality. \nDoré is the first musician authorised by the Rachmaninoff family to orchestrate the composer’s long-lost Suite in D minor\, a four-movement orchestral work composed in 1891\, lost for more than a century\, and rediscovered in 2001. While the orchestral premiere will take place later this year in Europe\, the Sydney recital will provide audiences with a rare insight into the creative process and vision behind this historic project. This program of solo piano transcriptions of Rachmaninoff’s works (as a prologue of the piano trio program) will be performed alongside his own compositions. Doré’s album Rachmaninoff Variations recorded at Abbey Road Studios continues to receive international acclaim. \nBookings
