Individual concert tickets for the 11th Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia are now on sale to the general public, offering classical music aficionados the chance to see some of the world’s finest young pianists take part in thrilling knockout performances at the Sydney Conservatorium and the Sydney Opera House from July 6 to 23.

The internationally renowned contest, this year guided by Artistic Director and pianist Piers Lane AO, takes place every four years and has grown in 2016 with 283 nominees – nearly doubling the previous field of applicants in 2012 – setting a formidable standard for pre-selections. Maestro Valery Gergiev is Artistic Patron of the competition.

In Sydney the Goldner Quartet, UK violinist Tasmin Little and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will perform with the pianists.

Ayesha Gough from Brisbane, Daniel Le from Melbourne, and Hong Kong-born Australian Jeremy So from Sydney, have progressed through the first stage to join the 32 competitors hailing from as far afield as Kazakhstan, Italy and Russia to China, USA and Hungary for the competition.

Past winners include: 1977 Irina Plotnikova, 1981 Chia Chou, 1985 Du Ning-Wu, 1988 Alexander Korsantiya, 1992 Xiang-Dong Kong, 1996 Sergei Tarasov, 2000 Marina Kolomiitseva, 2004 John Chen, 2008 Konstantin Shamray and 2012 Avan Yu.
