Whilst the focus of opera has shifted from the stage to the harbour, mainstage opera lovers have to bide their time till June for the winter season to begin.

With it comes Opera Australia’s revival of Elijah Moshinsky’s production of Verdi’s Don Carlos (July 14 – August 15) planned on an epic scale and expected to be the company’s biggest production since The 2014 Ring Cycle in Melbourne.

Taking the role of Philip II is the Italian bass Ferruccio Furlanetto, presently singing the role at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, having performed the role there in 2010 and 2013. He has also sung the role at the Royal Opera Covent Garden (2013), in Vienna and in Sofia (both 2014). Through these productions Furlanetto has made the role his own and the Sydney season of Don Carlos will be much-anticipated by fans.

Andrea Licata will conduct the Sydney production which will star both Australian and overseas talent with Latonia Moore who has dazzled as Aida, singing the role of Elisabeth de Valois, reprising her Aida partnership with Milijana Nikolic who will sing Princess Eboli.
