Some of the finest sacred music written over the centuries has appeared as part of the liturgical offering for the Lenten period, particularly during Holy Week (leading up to Good Friday). Sacred choral compositions, usually based on poignant liturgical texts, such as The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross, Responsories for Tenebrae and Lamentations, appear in collections by Victoria, Lassus, Palestrina, Schütz, and many other composers.

At its 2016 Lenten concert the Choir of Christ Church St Laurence conducted by Neil McEwan  will sing Responsories and Lamentations of Gesualdo, Lassus and Victoria, and the Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross by Heinrich Schütz. The program will also include the moving motet of J.S. Bach, Jesu, meine Freude, with the Schütz and Bach to be performed with the St. Laurence Baroque Ensemble.

Tickets are $30 and $25, available at the door. Seating is unreserved and there is accessible entry at the main doors in George St.
