City Jungle – A Battle Of Hits…(and Who Is Reginald?)

When:  From 19-Oct-11 to 22-Oct-11, at 8 pm
Where:  The Reginald, Seymour Centre, Corner City Road and Cleveland Street, Chippendale.

Syncopation, multimetrics, polyrhythms with the added spritz of digital programming . In City Jungle, two of the nation’s leading virtuoso percussion ensembles, face off  in a concert  that presents their dual vision of UK breakbeats. Burying the hatchet of inter-city rivalry – or perhaps raising it higher – Sydney’s Synergy Percussion and Melbourne’s Speak Percussion join forces. The dark, brooding sounds of Terminal Sound System fuse with the darting rhythmic complexities and timbral explosions from Speak Percussion. Synergy’s lush sound-world of marimbas, vibraphones, vocals, gongs, and futuristic electronic gadgets will be pitted against the raw power of the Jungle aesthetic. Those who know their subgenres can expect sounds from Futurist and Autonomic through to Doom n Bass – plus a couple of Rollers thrown in for good measure.

Synergy Percussion have been a cornerstone of  percussion and New Music nationally and overseas for over 35 years, whilst over the past 10 years Speak Percussion have established a fine reputation for cross-genre arts activities.

With visuals by Terminal Sound System and TokyoLoveIn, City Jungle is supported by New Music Network.

As for Reginald…It’s the new name for the theatre previously known as the ‘Downstairs’ at the Seymour Centre.

Why Reginald? Well – back in 1966, Everest York Seymour, the founder of the retails chain Fosseys, died leaving a $1 million bequest to the City of Sydney or the University of Sydney for the construction of a centre for the nurturing of musical and dramatic arts in Sydney. It was a gracious acknowledgement of his generosity to name the principal theatres of this centre and indeed, the building itself, after his various monikers.

Recently, it was discovered that he had another ‘middle’ name – Reginald, and this year, the ‘Downstairs’ was re-named The Reginald.

In this, its first season, The Reginald is presenting works that promise exciting ideas in performance as well as supporting the growth and development of small and emerging arts companies.
