The Opéra National de Paris begins its 350th Anniversary celebrations with this new staging of one French culture’s true glories,  Meyerbeer’s spectacular Grand Opera Les Huguenots, captured live from the Opéra Bastille, Paris, 4 Oct 2018. Staged for the first time in 80 years, a great cast has been assembled for this l0ng-awaited revivalincluding Lisette Oropesa, Yosep Kang, Ermonela Jaho and Nicolas Testé.

Ermonela Jaho sang in Sydney as Violetta in Opera Australia’s production of La Traviata in 2017. She returns to Sydney next year in the title role of Anna Bolena.

An immediate success on its first staging in 1836, Les Huguenots became a Paris Opera repertory mainstay and was the first work to be performed by the company 1000 times. It’s a monumental fresco featuring various impossible loves in the context of the 16th century conflict between French Protestants (Huguenots) and the Catholic majority under Charles IX.

For its revival, Andreas Kriegenburg places these romantic and religious entanglements in an immaculate futuristic setting in which the costumes appear yet more flamboyant and the victims’ blood more violently red. The exciting Michele Mariotti conducts.
