The Sydney Mozart Society presents the Goldner String Quartet, Australia’s pre-eminent string quartet, performing works by all the composers of the First Viennese ‘School’ with the exception of Mozart!
The ensemble has chosen pieces that convey the contradictions and complexity of life in ways that words could not. They also chart the course from the Classical era into the Romantic. The quartet will open with a work by Papa (Franz Joseph) Haydn, Mozart’s peer and one of the great Classical composers. The Dream is radiant and airy but with moments of unsettled introspection. Haydn’s occasional pupil, (Ludwig von) Beethoven’s Quartett serioso builds a powerful and dramatic tension only to banish it with unexpected and irrepressible joy. Franz Schubert’s Death and the Maiden quartet is lyrical yet achingly poignant, filled with intense emotions and dark beauty.
Just returned from a successful tour of the UK and Ireland, the four founding members of the Goldner String Quartet are well known to local and international audiences and are sure to delight with this program of master works.
