Selby & Friends July 2019 concert series, From Russia with Love is a nod to James Bond’s famous movie of the same name.
This program is a devastating cocktail from five giants of classical music, showcasing Russian greats Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov combined with the musical genius of Beethoven and Debussy who were supported in their works by Russian patrons.
These five masterminds of the classical music world were all notorious for their escapades in love. Tchaikovsky and Scriabin abandoned their married lives, Debussy was embroiled in scandalous affairs with married women, Rachmaninov was shunned by the Russian Orthodox Church for his marriage to his first-cousin and Beethoven remained a bachelor throughout his career, his music inspired by the many women who entered his life.
The music showcased in From Russia with Love reflects these interesting and complicated personal stories and is sure to leave you shaken and stirred with the playfulness of Beethoven, the emotional anguish of Scriabin and the rousing drama of Tchaikovsky, Debussy and Rachmaninov.
Artistic Director/Pianist Kathryn Selby is joined by virtuoso violinist Daniel Dodds and popular ACO Principal cellist Timo-Veikko Valve with whom she recently toured, for a program which highlights the breathtaking soloistic capabilities of these performers.
