Tenor Andrew Goodwin and pianist Roland Peelman AM perform a selection of German Art Song by Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann, presented by Melbourne Digital Concert Hall.

In 1814, Beethoven wrote the first real song cycle in history. Entitled  ‘An die ferne Geliebte’  (To the distant beloved), the songs express his love and longing for someone he had barely met or perhaps just imagined.  Beethoven’s outpouring of unrequited love from afar set the scene for romantic song writing as we know it.  Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann took this artform to new heights in the subsequent decades, delving into the rich repository of German romantic poetry.  This recital contains some of their most astonishing poetic achievements.
