SBS Youth Orchestra Presents Mahler Symphony No 4

When:  On 26-Aug-12, at 2.30 pm
Where:  Newcastle Conservatoium of Music, corner Auckland and Laman Streets, Newcastle.

The SBS Youth Orchestra with soprano Jenny Liu, conducted by Carolyn Watson performs Mahler’s Symphony No 4 in its concert A Heavenly Pleasure at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music in late August.

Founded by the late Matthew Krel in 1988, the orchestra has become an institution, with dozens of musicians amongst its alumni. It ” reflects the best principles of multiculturalism, from the composers it plays, the countries it tours, and in the culturally diverse backgrounds of its young players”.

Carolyn Watson describes the work: “Composed between 1899 and 1901, Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 is the last of what are typically known as his Wunderhorn symphonies, so called because of their use of themes from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Mahler’s earlier song cycle. Possibly best known for the final movement which uses a setting of Das himmlische Leben, this symphony calls on smaller forces than are generally associated with the composer and his symphonies. Equally interesting is the fact that the second movement is like a danse macabre, featuring a scordatura solo violin representing a skeleton!”

Tickets: Adult $12, Concession $8, Children $5.
