Concertante String Quartet presents a world premiere visual presentation of The Erlking by Schubert.

American animator Benny Zelkowicz’s sand animation project tells the German folkloric tale of the King of the Fairies (Der Erlkonig), written as a poem by Goethe and set to music by Schubert in 1815 with later revisions. The stop-motion, clay and sand animation film will be screened with the live performance. It has been screened at The Sundance, Annecy and New York Film Festivals. Zelkowicz’s work has appeared in The Simpsons, Moral Orel and the LEGO Movie.

The story of The Erlking challenges the singer to portray all four characters in the tale – the narrator, father, son and the Erlking. The little boy is scared as his father carries him home on horseback at night…he hears rustling in the leaves and sees wisps of fog and thinks he’s being attacked by a supernatural being.

Schubert drew inspiration from the great themes of nature and poems by Goethe. His much-loved Serenade (Ständchen) will also be performed along with some of Schubert’s most famous and beloved works, including the String Quartet No. 13 in A minor(the Rosamunde Quartet) and the Shepherd on the Rock, with clarinettist Diane Gardiner and soprano Michaele Archer who observes that Schubert’s music is “fresh, light and full of the hope and buoyancy of Spring. It’s fitting we’re performing this program at this time of year.”
