Sydney University Graduate Choir Christmas Concert

When:  On 08-Dec-19, at 5 pm
Where:  The Great Hall, University of Sydney

The Sydney University Graduate Choir and full orchestra under Music Director, Christopher Bowen OAM, present a concert of timeless carols and sacred music, featuring the rare delight of Josef Rheinberger’s Christmas cantata, The Star of Bethlehem. Munich-based Rheinberger (1839-1901) composed the Star of Bethlehem to words by his wife, the gifted poet Franziska “Fanny” von Hoffnaass. It is a charming and moving account of the Nativity, and is the premiere of this work in Australia. Also on the programme, the Christmas Overture by the German early Romantic composer, Otto Nicolai (1810-1849), based on a Christmas hymn, with words and music by Martin Luther. The concert will also reflect the season with four carols, two sung by the Chamber Choir.

The soloists featured are soprano Elke Hook and bass David Hidden. Elke Hook has been a regular soloist with the choir for a number of years, most recently in Rossini’s “Petite Messe Solennelle” last December. Elke has also been the soloist for the City of Sydney “Christmas at the Town Hall” event with this choir for several years, and performs regularly with other choirs. Bass David Hidden, a favourite with the choir, has been a soloist for a number of concerts, also most recently in December 2018. David has toured Australia with Opera Australia and Musica Viva Programs.
