The Spooky Men's Chorale - bigger, blacker, deeper and more hairy than ever before

The Spooky Men’s Chorale – bigger, blacker, deeper and more hairy than ever before.

Armed only with their voices, a sly collection of hats and facial hair, The Spooky Men’s Chorale prepare to lay the country to waste….

These de facto archdeacons of low-frequency vocal mayhem, have performed at festivals and concerts all over Australia and internationally, including six critically acclaimed tours of the UK. Now, these fifteen craggy specimens of latter-day masculinity undertake their most ambitious Australian tour to date.

Burdened by a vast, lovable incomprehension and dignified with cavernous vocal chords, The Spooky Men’s Chorale employ a devastating combination of beauty and stupidity to comment on the paradoxes of being a man. An evening with The Spooky Men’s Chorale is like nothing else. They are capable of rendering audiences moist-eyed with mute appreciation or haplessly gurgling with merriment.

Toting black gear, a nifty selection of hats and a judicious array of facial hair, they take to the stage with buffoonery and singing voices of exceptional warmth. Each concert is a cornucopia of musical adventures which ennoble and ridicule the paradoxes of man-ness. The repertoire, which began with a simple combination of Georgian table songs, immaculate ballads and tawdry anthems like “Don’t stand between a man and his tool”, has expanded to include sly and witty commentary on their own favourite body parts and a mock Sufi ode to the Bee Gees.

The Spookies have almost singlehandedly redefined the world of men’s singing. Since their formation in 2001 in the Blue Mountains of NSW by Christchurch-born Spookmeister Stephen Taberner, they have become darlings of the folk festival circuit and the ABC. They expanded their operations with tours of major venues and festivals in the UK and Europe.

Now in their 17th year, and with 5 studio albums under their belt, the Spookies are bigger, blacker, deeper and more hairy than ever before.
