Warren Burt To Deliver 2014 Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address
The Peggy Glanville-Hicks address for 2014 is to be delivered by Warren Burt speaking on Music : Still ahead of the game.
Presented and established in 1999 by the New Music Network, the Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address honours of one of Australia’s great international composers, creating an annual forum for ideas relating to the creation and performance of Australian music. Each year, an outstanding advocate of Australian music delivers the address with the intent of challenging the status quo and raising issues of importance in new music.
Music today consists of a bewildering variety of kinds of music and music making. Warren Burt’s address will be a ‘big picture’ look at how changes in the condition of music (some desirable and some maybe not-so) could point out the way things might develop in our present-day science fiction society.
In his lecture, Warren will be demonstrating and performing short pieces using cutting edge technology on the iPad platform – microtonal and algorithmic programs such as Musix Pro, Thumbjam, Zeta+, Sector, Samplr, Lemur, Jasuto Pro, Virtual ANS and Wilsonic will be performed on, with each giving a hint of where music technology is likely to go in the next 5-10 years.
Warren Burt is a composer, performer, video-artist, sound-poet, and instrument designer. Originally from the US, he attended the State University of NY and the University of California San Diego before moving to Australia in 1975. He has performed his work in North America, Europe and Australasia, and has composed works for a wide variety of media, including orchestral, chamber, opera and electronic composed musics, improvised music, music theatre, and video-art. He has been involved with the design of both hardware and software electronic musical instruments, as well as inventing microtonal acoustic instruments.
