The Willoughby Symphony’s final concert for 2014 will showcase the talents of Australia’s rising music stars performing a selection of beloved works by Mozart and Bach.

The orchestra, choir and guest soloists will be conducted by accomplished young conductor, Paul Fitzsimon. The concert will also feature the world premiere of the winning composition of the 2014 Willoughby Symphony/Fine Music 102.5 Young Composer Award by Christopher Pantelidis, Southern Cross.

“My composition, Southern Cross, is named after the recognised collection of stars of the same name. Throughout history it has had many meanings and significance to many cultures all across the globe,” said Pantelidis.

To the Aborigines and the Maori, it represents the various spirits that play a central role in their ancestral beliefs and today it features as a national symbol on the flags of several southern nations including our own flag.  It was these various meanings that I drew from and I aimed to represent through my music the elements of indigenous mysticism and the mystery that we all feel in all aspects of the universe,” he added.

Also on the programme, Mozart’s glorious Requiem and J S  Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins performed by violinists Phoebe Gardner and Harry Ward.
