2013 BBC Proms programme announced
It’s on again! The world’s biggest music festival, the BBC Proms, will run for nearly 2 months in 2013 from July 12th to September 7th.
Paganini and the sea feature in the famed opening night programme with Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, and Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony alongside Paganini inspired compositions by Rachmaninov and Lutoslawski.
Based at the Royal Albert Hall, there are also concerts at venues in the area, amongst them, the Cadogan Hall at Sloane Square and the Royal College of Music. There’s Gospel, World Music, the Dr Who Prom and every genre of the classics. Highlights include Wagner’s Ring Cycle from Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin, with soloists including Nina Stemme and Bryn Terfel, Waltraud Meier, Simon O’Neill and David Wilson-Johnson.
The Last Night of the Proms, possibly more famous and certainly more festive than the opening night, will for the first time be conducted by a female conductor as Marin Alsop directs the orchestra and soloists Joyce DiDonato and Nigel Kennedy in music that has become integral to the evening – Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 in D major (‘Land of Hope and Glory’), Parry’s Jerusalem, Londonderry Air and Rule, Britannia! Kennedy will play Vaighan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and DiDonato will sing arias from Massenet’s Chérubin, Handel’s Xerxes and Rossini’s La donna del lago.
