Californian Choral Music Meets Sydney Madrigal Society As Students Collaborate In Choral Festival
Californian choral music comes to Sydney when Bakersfield College Chamber Choir from California and Sydney University Madrigal Society perform together in an Evening of Sublime Song.
Touring Australia for the first time, Bakersfield College Chamber Choir directed by Dr Jennifer Garrett, will make its Sydney debut in this historic church, sharing the stage with their contemporaries from Sydney’s sandstone university.
Since its humble beginnings as four students singing madrigals around a piano, Sydney University Madrigal Society (MADS) has evolved into a full chamber choir. Their repertoire encompasses part-song to chanson and, of course, madrigals. Lucy Harrison-Prentice, majoring in French and Linguistics at the University of Sydney, is the choir’s conductor, and is looking forward to the chance to share rarely heard gems from their recent concert, Violets in Her Lap.
While in Sydney, Bakersfield and MADS will join other USA choirs, Australian university choir members, and the Shanghai S-future Choir, in a four-day festival under the baton of Grammy-Award-winning Maestro Craig Hella Johnson. The festival culminates in a Gala Concert in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 July.
Admission is free.
