Omega Ensemble’s Momentum Features Three Revolutionary Quintets
Omega Ensemble is joined by Melbourne cellist Howard Penny in its final Virtuoso Series concert for 2018, Momentum, featuring the music of Schubert and Mendelssohn.
Scored unusually for two violins, viola and two cellos, Schubert’s Cello Quintet was composed during the final weeks of the composer’s life, and ranks among his greatest accomplishments. This momentous work is accompanied by Mendelssohn’s String Quintet No. 2 and the Australian premiere of British composer David Bruce’s Gumboots for Clarinet and String Quartet.
The program: Schubert String Quintet in C major, D. 956, “Cello Quintet”/ Mendelssohn String Quintet No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 87/ Bruce “Gumboots” for Clarinet and String Quartet (2008) [Australian Premiere]
