The Australia Piano Quartet (APQ), returns to the Utzon Room of the Sydney Opera House for its fourth season, reviving enduring masterpieces, unearthing forgotten piano quartet pieces and performing new commissioned works by Australian composers.

In their June programme Might and Majesty, the APQ premieres Jack Symonds’ Your Cruel Melodies for Tenor and Piano Quartet (2017 APQ commission) with Johannes Brahms Piano Quartet No.2 in A major, Op.26.

Comprising violinist Rebecca Chan, violist James Wannan, cellist Thomas Rann and pianist Daniel de Borah, the APQ presents the best of new Australian chamber music, unveiling some very exciting world premiere commissions in 2017, alongside beloved masterworks and long neglected gems.

Thomas Rann, APQ’s founding Artistic Director and cellist says, “Our performances in the Utzon Room have become a real highlight of our annual program. From debut platform to regular Sydney venue, the Utzon Room is now a familiar and intimate stage where APQ can engage in a direct and personal dialogue with our audiences – in the only venue at the Opera House with a view! ”

Recent Australia Piano Quartet performance highlights include their Wigmore Hall and Barbican Centre debuts in London, a residency at Shanghai University, live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and Foxtel Arts, as part of the Helpmann Awards.

The programme:
Jack Symonds Your Cruel Melodies for Tenor and Piano Quartet (2017 APQ commission)
