Finalists Announced For 2017 APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards
Some of Australia’s finest composers and performers in contemporary classical, jazz and experimental music have today been named as finalists for the 2017 Art Music Awards.
Nominees are spread over performing and non-performing categories. Australian State and Territory Awards will be announced during the awards ceremony, while the Distinguished Services to Australian Music Award will be announced in the coming weeks.
The finalists include composers Paul Stanhope for Agnus Dei and Katie Noonan, Paul Dean, Andrew Ford, Paul Grabowsky, Iain Grandage, David Hirschfelder, Elena Kats-Chernin, John Rodgers, Richard Tognetti and Carl Vine for With Love and Fury in the Vocal/Choral Work of the Year.
Ross Edwards’ Frog and Star Cycle: double concerto for alto saxophone, percussion and orchestra and Lyle Chan’s Serenade for Tenor, Saxophone and Orchestra (“My Dear Benjamin”) are two of four contenders in the running for Orchestral Work of the Year.
Nominees in other categories include Liza Lim, Andrew Ford, the Adelaide Chamber Singers and pianist Michael Kieran Harvey.
The Art Music Awards also recognise excellence by organisations and individuals in various non-performing categories. Speak Percussion and Synergy & Taikoz Limited are nominated amongst others, for Excellence by an Organisation. The award for Excellence in Music Education is contested by Goulburn Regional Conservatorium, Canberra Symphony Orchestra and University of Canberra, Moorambilla Voices, Sydney Symphony Orchestra for their annual teacher-training program, TunED-Up! and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
The 2017 Art Music Awards will be presented at a gala event in Sydney on Tuesday 22 August at the City Recital Hall. Staged jointly by APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre (AMC), the ceremony will be hosted by ABC presenter Simon Marnie and curated by Gabriella Smart.
