Phoenix Collective Quartet On Tour
April 15, 2023 @ 2:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Phoenix Collective Quartet (PCQ) plays Kodály, Sculthorpe & Balakrishnan in an April tour of Canberra, Sydney (Mosman and Annandale), Central Coast and Newcastle.
Fresh from their debut at the Melbourne Recital Centre, PCQ presents a program that explores ideas of national identity, featuring the music of Hungarian patriot Zoltán Kodály and Peter Sculthorpe, one of the founders of modern Australian composition.
In his String Quartet no 1, Kodály broke away from the tradition of German Romanticism, instead using Hungarian folk melodies as inspiration. On the other side of the world, Sculthorpe’s String Quartet no 11, subtitled Jabiru Dreaming, is a dreamily evocative exploration of the sounds of the Australian landscape. The final piece on the program, David Balakrishnan’s Skylife is a brilliant contemporary jazz fusion work exploring concepts of the ‘American vernacular’.
PCQ will bring these diverse works to life, discovering, comparing and contrasting their features and compositional styles in the context of their times.
The Phoenix Collective Quartet is a premier string quartet performing concerts in Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, the Central Coast and regional NSW. Its members come from the ranks of national and international orchestras such as the Opera Australia Orchestra, the Canberra Symphony, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, Kammer Philharmonie Köln, the Boston Symphony, and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
The performers: PCQ : Artistic Director & violin I, Dan Russell. Violin II, Pip Thompson. Viola, Ella Brinch. Cello, Andrew Wilson.
