New Release On Move By Knighton And Farid
Cellist Zoe Knighton and pianist Amir Farid present their seventh collaboration in a new recording Brahms’ Cello on the Move label with music by Johannes Brahms.
The program includes his sonatas for cello as well as three Art Songs where the cello presents the wordless vocal line .
The musical partnership between Knighton and Farid spans 15 years during which time the pair have explored a vast amount of repertoire together. The two sonatas for piano and cello by Brahms was a natural and inevitable progression.
One of Knighton’s favourite memories from a concert is hearing Farid play the opening of the B major trio Op. 8 by Brahms and since then, the pair have been planning to record the sonatas. Given Farid’s love of songs and his incomparable ability to bring out the best in singers when he plays with them, Knighton asked him to choose three of his favourite songs by Brahms to pair with these two sonatas for cello and piano.
Played on a modern Australian cello made in Castlemaine by celebrated maker Rainer Beilharz, the three songs, originally sung in German, find an unexpectedly natural home and act as enticing entrées to these seminal works.
