A New Musical Premieres In Sydney
There is a new musical premiering in Sydney, written by two young composers and aimed at creating fresh material for future performance by secondary schools.
Just A Second is a musical written by Alice Chance and Will Yaxley. Together, they are striving to provide fresh, relevant musical theatre for young people and Just a Second is aimed at providing an exciting alternative for future high school performance.
Existing repertoire choices for school musicals can mean that content is not contemporary and relevant; the rights of some “big hit” musicals can take many years to be released; they can be costly and can leave students with the feeling that they’re not performing anything fresh or relevant to them. In writing Just A Second, Alice and Will have written a musical that aims to complement the strengths of young people and of a school with relevant subject matter. It offers affordability, adaptability and a contemporary spin. The project has won considerable public support with its initiation made possible by crowd funding.
Alice is a composer whose music is widely commissioned and performed throughout Sydney and internationally. She has worked with ensembles such as the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship, Sydney Children’s Choir and Sydney Youth Orchestras. Her work has been performed throughout the USA and England. She has experience in tutoring and conducting youth choirs. This year she co-wrote and Music Directed the Con Revue with Will Yaxley.
From an early age, Will has sung and toured with the Christchurch Cathedral Choir, NZ, soloing in Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s, London. He has played lead roles in The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum as well as smaller roles in Guys and Dolls, Sweeney Todd. His work has been premiered by the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. This year he co-wrote and directed the Con Revue with Alice Chance.
