Acacia Quartet, presents La Malinconia, an exquisite afternoon concert which takes its  title from the fourth movement of Beethoven’s String Quartet No.6, La Malinconia (‘melancholy’). They will perform three outstanding works in the elegant North Sydney concert venue with its famously magnificent acoustic.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 18, No.6 is the last of a set of six string quartets, making up Opus 18. The set was commissioned by Prince Lobkowitz and No. 6 became celebrated for the innovative harmonic spectrum in its final movement.

Gordon Kerry’s String Quartet No. 5, a new Australian work, is featuring various hymns and nature descriptions. The program will finish with Antonín Dvorák’s famous String Quartet No. 12, Op. 96, ‘American’. Dvorák wrote this wonderful piece during the summer of 1893, while on vacation in Spillville, Iowa and it clearly shows African-American influences.

In just seven years, Acacia Quartet – comprising violinists Lisa Stewart and Myee Clohessy, violist Stefan Duwe and cellist Anna Martin-Scrase – have won great respect for their versatile and inventive programs which couple established repertoire with the unorthodox. They have recorded six albums – three of which earned nominations for an ARIA Award for ‘Best Classical Album’ and an APRA-AMCOS Art Music ‘Award for Excellence’. Their performances feature regularly on ABC Classic FM and Fine Music 102.5. Acacia’s engagements have not just included Australia, but also Canada and Germany, where they recently recorded a CD of string quartets by Günter Raphael. Acacia is passionate about supporting Australian composers and working with young musicians.
