Adelaide Festival 2022 Opens With A ‘Kosky-kov’ Gem
Barrie Kosky will return to the Adelaide Festival in 2022 with its headline production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s fantasy opera The Golden Cockerel.
The result of this collision of genius from Rimsky-Korkov and Kosky has resulted in a brilliant “Kosky-kov” production which will star British-Ukrainian bass-baritone Pavlo Hunka as the king, Russian lyric coloratura soprano Venera Gimadieva as the queen, and Russian tenor Andrei Popov as the astrologer. Maestro Arvo Volmer will return to conduct the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra of which he was formerly Music Director.
The production is Berlin-based Kosky’s third for the Adelaide Festival following on the baroque sumptuousness of Handel’s Saul in 2015 and the brilliantly graphic version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute in 2017. The production premiered at the Opéra National de Lyon in May 2021, followed by a season at the Festival D’Aix-en-Provence in July in a continuation of the collaboration between the two festivals.
Sydney audiences will need few excuses to enjoy a trip interstate and experience some truly world-class opera.
The Golden Cockerel at the the Adelaide Festival will run from March 4-9 2022.
