Australia Ensemble 2015
The Australia Ensemble @UNSW, returns in 2015 with Raising Sparks, an exciting season of music curated by artistic chair Paul Stanhope.
“A spark. The glimmer of something new – an idea full of infinite potential. The flame that illuminates and warms. A Catherine Wheel of delight” writes Stanhope.
Highlights of the 2015 season include Beethoven’s third Razumovsky quartet, Schubert’s ‘Trout’ quintet, new music by Nigel Butterley and Ross Edwards, as well as guest appearances from mezzo-soprano Fiona Campbell, harpist Alice Giles, guitarist Karin Schaupp and percussionist Claire Edwardes.
The ensemble presents 6 concerts for the year, one a month from March to May and August to October. All concerts are at the Sir John Clancy Auditorium at the University of New South Wales, starting at 8 pm.
The title of the series is taken from a major composition Scottish composer by James MacMillan (b 1959) featured in the first program. Other programs for the year are inspired by themes of twentieth century music, ‘Spirits and Shadows’, nature, Bohemian music and politics in music. The series commemorates the 80th birthdays of Nigel Butterley and Peter Maxwell Davies.
