Australia Ensemble@UNSW Transfigures Night And Day
The Australia Ensemble@UNSW returns to the stage in March with the inaugural concert of its 2016 season.
The programme entitled Transfigured Night takes its name from Arnold Schoenberg’s masterful string sextet Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), an early work reflecting this composer’s interest and mastery of late Romantic musical ideas.
Inspired by a poem of the expressionist poet, Richard Dehmel, it is a restless expression of highly emotional states in a musical language that would soon make way for a radical departure in Schoenberg’s style.
Joined by guest artist harpist Alice Giles, the program illustrates contrasts between day and night, beginning with Joaquín Turina’s Circulo suggesting the cyclical aspects of a day passing into night. Australian composer Don Banks’ quirky jazz-inflected modernism moves through to the masterful Indian sitar player and composer, Ravi Shankar’s L’Aube Enchantée (The Enchanted Dawn), via the atmospheric impressions of night by Dallapiccola and Schubert.
The programme:
Joaquin TURINA Circulo op. 91 (1942)/ Don BANKS Prologue, Night Piece and Blues for Two (1968)/ Luigi DALLAPICCOLA Piccola musica notturna (1954)/ Ravi SHANKAR The Enchanted Dawn (1976)/ Franz SCHUBERT Notturno D897 in E flat (c 1827)/ Arnold SCHOENBERG Transfigured Night op. 4 (1899)
