The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra presents Madness & Confrontation in its celebratory season opener themed around Mozart and madness.

Madness & Confrontation takes its inspiration from the story of the orchestra’s founding artistic director Richard Gill AO conducting Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro (based on the original play “Day of Madness”). It was the late, legendary musician and music educator who, together with co-artistic directors Rachael Beesley and Nicole van Bruggen, had the idea of establishing the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra.

Along with a selection of duets and arias from Figaro, Mozart’s well-known clarinet concerto is performed by Nicole van Bruggen on basset clarinet – the original instrument for which the work was written. The climactic piece is Beethoven’s magnificent 5th Symphony – which ushered classical music into a new era. Its infamous opening four-note motif confronts and enthralls audiences to this day.

The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra is directed by Rachael Beesley with soloists soprano Jacqueline Porter, baritone David Greco, and Nicole van Bruggen, basset clarinet.

The programme: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, The Marriage of Figaro – Duets & Arias, Clarinet Concerto in A Major/ Ludwig van Beethoven:  Symphony No.5 in C Minor

The performers: Rachael Beesley, director; Jacqueline Porter, Soprano; David Greco Baritone; Nicole van Bruggen, basset clarinet
