‘Bach Eternal’ with the Brandenburg
The Brandenburg Choir joins the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra for this concert exclusive to Sydney. Conducted by Artistic Director Paul Dyer, the ensemble will present music by the nobility of the Baroque era – the Lutheran Johann Sebastian Bach, his Catholic counterpart Jan Dismas Zelenka, the gentleman George Frideric Handel and the mentor Georg Philipp Telemann. Two of Handel’s Coronation Anthems, Telemann’s double horn concerto and and excerpts from JS Bach’s cantatas are amongst the highlights of this programme listed in full below.
It is an interesting comment on Western civilisation that when the Voyager spacecraft was launched, it carried a sound recording representing the achievements of the human race, should it encounter any alien forms of life. This cache of sound was dominated by the music of JS Bach.
Of Bach’s music, Paul Dyer says ““For a musician, performing Bach is the ultimate. It’s ferociously challenging and yet overwhelmingly satisfying. It is total perfection and always gives an inward sense of fulfilment. I named the orchestra and choir after his Brandenburg Concertos to honour him. It’s impossible not to be profoundly touched by the genius of Bach.”
The first half of the programme is devoted to the choral masterpieces of JS Bach. Telemann’s double horn concerto is featured in the second half with soloists Darryl Poulsen and Doree Dixon, natural horns, along with the music of Zelenka and Handel.
