An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch…who raps?
They’re all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale, Into the Woods, presented by Chatswood Musical Society in May.
When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell. They swindle, lie to and steal from Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later – with disastrous results!
What begins as a lively, irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children. Remember: “Children will listen”!
Into the Woods – the original Broadway stage hit, recently seen in an award-winning Disney film version – is directed by Leonie Cambadge, assisted by Peter Meredith, with musical direction by Anthony Cutrupi and choreography by Melissa Trickey.
It stars Tim Page as the Narrator/Mysterious Man, Alexandra de Zwart as Cinderella, Jamie Collette as The Baker, Jessica James-Moody as The Baker’s Wife, Chapin Ayres as The Witch, Tim Garnham as Jack, Kate Mannix as Jack’s Mother, Joshua Rogers as Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf, Richard Woodhouse as Rapunzel’s Prince, Michaella Edelstein as Rapunzel, Tisha Kelemen as Cinderella’s Stepmother, Kathy Xenos as Florinda/Snow White, Heather Campbell as Lucinda/Sleeping Beauty, Sarah Dolan as Little Red Ridinghood, Inara Molinari as Ghost of Cinderella’s Mother/Granny/Giant’s Wife, Anthony Young as the Steward, Allan Royal as Cinderella’s Father and Mary Bentley as Milky White.
