Classic 100 – Voice: 8 CD Set

It’s over for another year – The Classic 100 – ABC Classic FM’s annual survey of listener favourites – which this year, compiled a list of the most popular 100 vocal works as voted in by listeners of ABC Classic FM.

Topping the selections was the last movement from Beethoven’s Symphony 9, featuring the Ode to Joy, closely followed by the tenor/baritone duet Au fond du temple saint from Bizet’s opera The Pearl Fishers. In third place was Handel’s oratorio Messiah.

Despite not featuring in the top 5, JS Bach and Mozart were the most popular composers, each with 8 works in the top 100. Around one-third of the works chosen were operas; a quarter were composed in the 20th century; and three Australian composers – Ross Edwards, Elena Kats-Chernin and Nigel Westlake – were voted in.

The Classic 100 – Voice is now available digitally and as an 8 CD set, featuring 10 hours of music, from ABC Classics (4826018). It contains highlights from all 100 of Australia’s best-loved vocal works: the grand oratorios of Bach, Handel and Haydn, opera arias by Puccini, Verdi and Wagner, the sparkling wit of Gilbert and Sullivan, contemporary classics by John Rutter, Elena Kats-Chernin and Karl Jenkins, and the timeless beauty of Arvo Pärt and Hildegard of Bingen.
