Classical Music In The Mainstream Media – Drowning and Waving
One of the reasons SoundsLikeSydney came into being was to address in some small way the rapidly developing void in classical music content in the mainstream media – and we’re not simply talking about advertising.
Increasingly, classical concerts are not being reviewed unless they’re given by excellent, but predictable members of a ‘magic circle’ of performers; if others are reviewed, these reviews are not being published; emerging or smaller ensembles seem rarely to be in the spotlight; achievements by many musicians both in Sydney and overseas gain little traction.
It’s no consolation, but it seems that we’re not alone as reported by Martin Cullingford, editor and publisher of Gramophone magazine who asks why the wider media is failing classical music despite strong and sustained interest from audiences.
