Classics At Dusk With Simon Tedeschi
Piano virtuoso Simon Tedeschi comes to Sydney’s North Shore for a twilight concert Classics at Dusk performing Jewish classics and a piano quintet.
Classics at Dusk is to be performed from 4pm at the North Shore Synagogue in Lindfield as part of the congregation’s 75th birthday celebrations.
It features Tedeschi performing Gershwin favourites such as Summertime, Rhapsody in Blue, I Got Rhythm and more. Plus vocal and instrumental favourites from the classic Jewish liturgical repertoire in exquisite all-new arrangements by Dr Joseph Toltz, all performed by Cantor Zvi Teichtahl and a piano and string quintet led by Benjamin Adler. Founded in 1940, North Shore was the first synagogue in the north of Sydney, and is still one of the city’s largest.
Simon Tedeschi is one of Australia’s most sought-after pianists, awarded several prestigious prizes including first prize in the Keyboard division of the Royal Overseas League Competition (UK), Symphony Australia’s Young Performer of the Year Award, and the Legacy Award from the Creativity Foundation (USA). Also recipient of a Centenary of Federation Medal, Tedeschi has performed in major concert halls throughout the world and for luminaries like Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama and their Royal Highnesses the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark. As soloist, he regularly performs with orchestras around Australia and worldwide, with conductors including Richard Bonynge, Alan Gilbert, Jun Märkl and Sir William Southgate.
Zvi Teichtahl has been chief cantor of the North Shore Synagogue since 2008 and is a highly regarded Australian-born lyric tenor whose training, scholarships, awards and performances have taken him all over Australia and to Israel. From a young age, Zvi has played an active role in Synagogue services in Melbourne and Sydney.
Ben Adler graduated on a full scholarship from Newington College with a perfect score in the International Baccalaureate Diploma program, studied in Washington and at the Sydney Conservatorium where he is now pursuing post-graduate studies. He was recently named the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Emerging Artist for 2016.
Dr Joseph Tolz is an international authority on Jewish music (including being co-investigator on a 3 year funded project at Leeds University). He has worked with Synagogue music for over 30 years as choirmaster, cantor and organist and is currently based at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In 2014 he produced the children’s opera Brundibar at the Angel Place Recital Hall and continues to sing professionally in a number of Sydney choirs.
