The Palace Gate Orchestra transports you to the grandeur of Russian musical life with its concert on Saturday August 13th.
Named after the gates of the magnificent Winter Palace in St Petersburg, home to Russia’s Tsars from 1732 till the revolution in 1917, the orchestra brings you the greats from the Russian repertoire throughout the centuries as well as less familiar works.
At just 24, conductor Hoshimi Sakai leads 70 of Sydney’s finest young musicians in a performance that includes 3 ipods in the world premiere of Australian composer Clifford Abbott’s atmospheric work Conflict and Resolution for full orchestra. Three violin sections transfix in Abbott’s catchy Gala Overture.
Also on the programme, the Symphony No 1by Shostakovich written by the 19 year old composer as his graduation piece at the St Petersburg Conservatory reputedly one of the finest symphonies of all time. It was premiered in 1926 to great acclaim by Nicolai Malko who also conducted several of Abbott’s works with the Leningrad Philharmonic.
