Eight Finalists For Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship
Eight outstanding young vocalists have been selected to progress to the final of the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship in their quest for prizes worth a total of $58,500 on offer for professional development.
The 2017 Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship Finalists are:
sopranos Amanda Windred, Jessica Harper, Joelene Griffith, Imogen-Faith Malfitano and Zoe Drummond, mezzo-soprano Bronwyn Douglass, lyric soprano Danita Weatherstone, all from NSW and tenor Boyd Owen from Melbourne.
Adjudicator Anson Austin OAM says entrants needed to display more than just solid vocal skills. “To make it to this stage of the competition they must have already achieved an acceptably high standard of technique. In addition to this, I’m looking for musicality and artistry and what they bring to the music in terms of interpretation”.
For the finals, the singers will have the rare opportunity to perform with the North Sydney Symphony Orchestra. “Performing with the orchestra is a really important aspect of the final,” adds Mr Austin. “It’s another level of development; a singer must be able to sing through thick orchestration as well as follow the conductor’s instructions and work as a team with the orchestra” said Mr Austin.
