Eistedfodd update – choral championship winners

Soulfood

The Sydney Eisteddfod presented the John Lamble Foundation Australasian Choral Championships in the Concert Hall at The Concourse, Chatswood in early June. The program featured choirs of all ages and types which had won places during the previous week’s various events of the Sydney Eisteddfod Choral section.

The primary and infant school choirs competed in the morning, the youth choirs in the afternoon and the open age choirs in the evening.    Adjudicators Michelle Leonard and Simon Kenway awarded first prize to the Waitara Voices from Waitara Primary School, Wahroonga, ahead of the The King’s Preparatory School Chamber Choir.

Later Philip Chu and Michelle Leonard judged nine choirs in the Youth Choir Championship won by the PLC Sydney Chamber Choir from Croydon, accompanied by piano, harp, flute and violin, while Fort Street High School Chamber Choir came in second.

Seven choirs competed in the section for Open Age Choirs which was won by the 50-strong a cappella group Soulfood. Established in 2004 as an initiative of the Lane Cove Christian City Church, Soulfood won this championship in both 2009 and 2011.  Shine Chorus, a Korean choir from Canada Bay won second place.

These six choirs are now eligible to compete in the Australian Choral Grand Prix that Sydney Eisteddfod present with the Rotary Club of Sydney Cove at the Salvation Army Congress Hall on 17 August, 2013.
