Ensemble Offspring Calls For Applications To Hatched Academy And Women Composer Programs
Ensemble Offspring invites submissions from exceptional emerging composers and performers from around Australia for both their 2019 Hatched Academy and Noisy Women Commission. All applications due 12 October, 2018.
Ensemble Offspring’s Hatched Academy enters its 6th year in 2019. This emerging artist development program is designed to provide practical experience to the next generation of innovative young performers and composers. Past alumni include trumpeter Callum G’Froerer, composers Samantha Wolf, Sam Smith and Julia Reedy and composer – saxophonist Jeremy Rose.
The program draws on the skills and expertise of Ensemble Offspring’s Artistic Director, Claire Edwardes, its core instrumentalists and local and international guest mentors. It offers an in-road into the vast and exciting world of new music making by providing participants with the opportunity to gain valuable new skills, insights and hands-on experience.
‘Emerging’ is defined here as an artist in the early stages of their career or someone who has yet to be significantly recognised. Opportunities are open to Australian residents only.
There are four programmes on offer:
1. Hatched Academy Associate Artist
Exceptional performers under 30 are encouraged to apply to be their Associate for 2019. Performers are paid professional rates for their performance activity and all travel costs are covered by Ensemble Offspring.
2. Hatched Open Mic
Emerging new and experimental music soloists and groups are encouraged to apply for Hatched Open Mic which will happen 17 August 2019 at 107 Projects Redfern. All production is covered by Ensemble Offspring and artists take home the door.
3. Hatched Academy Composer Summer School
Held in Sydney from 9-13 December 2019, this will be a five-day intensive course with Ensemble Offspring in residence and guest mentors, Yannis Kyriakides (Amsterdam), Kate Neal (Melbourne) and Damien Ricketson (Sydney). All travel is covered by Ensemble Offspring and the summer school is free of charge. Emerging composers from around Australia are encouraged to apply.
4. Noisy Women Commission
Ensemble Offspring is proud to announce the continuation of ‘Noisy Women’, our annual award for an emerging female composer. The $3500 commission will now be a competitive round by application and is open to all Australian female composers who consider themselves emerging.
The Noisy Women initiative has already been responsible for successful new works by Fiona Hill (Pentography) and Elizabeth Younan (to be premiered at Carriageworks, 2019). The commission is designed to provide significant creative freedom to an emerging composer, foster artistic development throughout the year and provide an opportunity for the new work to be workshopped and presented in a high-profile concert.
As well as the cash commission fee, the Noisy Women prize includes workshop sessions with Ensemble Offspring and professional documentation of the premiere. The work can be up to 12 minutes in length and should be for the combination of flute, clarinet, percussion, piano, violin and cello, or an agreed subset thereof. Use of electronics and multi media can be discussed. The new work will be workshopped in 2019 and premiered in 2020.
