Ensemble Offspring’s Lone Hemispheres Features Two World Premieres
Ensemble Offspring presents a showcase of the sheer virtuosity of three of its core musicians in Lone Hemispheres, an evening of works inspired by the uncompromising power and aural intensity of a true revolutionary, Iannis Xenakis, architect, mathematician and composer. His music is fiendishly difficult, yet described as “joyously elemental music which turns collections of pitches and rhythms into a force of nature” (Tom Service).
In Lone Hemispheres, Claire Edwardes, Veronique Serret and Zubin Kanga take on seminal solo works by Xenakis – Rebonds A/B, Mikka, Mikka S and Evryali – and pair them with emerging composer Elizabeth Younan’s Electors of Middlemarch and world premieres of bespoke solos by Berlin-based Australian, Cathy Milliken, and Sydney composer Michael Smetanin.
The program: Iannis Xenakis – Rebonds A/B (1989) for percussion / Mikka/Mikka S (1971/76) for violin /Iannis Xenakis – Evryali (1973) for piano
Elizabeth Younan – Electors of Middlemarch (2018) for drum set up & voice solo /Cathy Milliken – Crie (2018) for violin solo (World Premiere) /Michael Smetanin – Four Angels (2018) for piano solo (World Premiere)
