Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra Dances To Its Tunes

The Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra presents La Danza, a program of sultry, romantic, hypnotic dance music, finally on the stage after being twice delayed by COVID lockdowns. .
Conducted by Colin Piper, this program of fantastic dance-themed works, includes Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, Ginastera’s Estancia Suite and Ravel’s hypnotic Bolero. The concert features violinist Alicia Poon, overall winner of the 2021 NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition, who returns to KPO to perform Chausson’s Poème.
Colin Piper has enjoyed a stellar career as both percussionist and pianist including as a principal with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra since 1968 and, among other notable credits, as founding member of internationally renowned percussion group Synergy – with performances throughout Europe, Asia and Australia over 40 years. In recent years in his roles as conductor and educator, his influence in Sydney and Australian musical life has been profound. He was awarded the OAM earlier this year.
Founded in 1971 the KPO draws on a pool of over one hundred players – professional musicians, music teachers, talented amateurs and advanced students from throughout the Sydney metropolitan area. The orchestra has become an integral part of the cultural life of the Ku-ring-gai community and is now acclaimed as one of Australia’s finest community orchestras. In addition to its regular and extensive concert program, the orchestra has appeared in dozens of major concerts and toured to regional centres. Featured soloists and guest conductors read as a who’s who of the Australian music world, including Phillip Shovk, Richard Tognetti, Stuart Challender, Carl Pini, Donald Hazelwood and Simone Young and will welcome back to Australia legendary pianist Roger Woodward for a one-off anniversary concert this December. It continues to commission and premiere new Australian work.
