Selby & Friends Tour Reflects On The Shadow Of War
August 29, 2022 @ 7:00 pm
Selby & Friends tours an immersive concert program entitled “In the Shadow of War” to Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, Turramurra and the NSW Southern Highlands from August 20th to 29th.
Artistic Director and pianist Kathryn Selby AM welcomes her guest artists, Australian Chamber Orchestra Principal Cellist Timo-Veikko Valve, and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Sophie Rowell, who is graciously stepping in for an indisposed Grace Clifford.
On the program are works by three composers connected by the impact of wartime conflict. Australian Matthew Hindson, composing his 1915 for piano, violin and cello, was spurred by thoughts of how a young person living over a century ago might react to the prospect of going to war. In 1944, Shostakovich wrote one of his greatest chamber music works, the Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 67, clearly a reflection of a world at war, and an immensely powerful musical experience. Also on the program is Franz Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major Op. 100, D929. This piano trio is a fine example of his natural gift for embracing life’s beauty – a counterweight to the constant threat of potential war during the Napoleanic era – and bringing this beauty to his music.
