SUMMARY:Stormlight from The Opera and Song Collective
DESCRIPTION:The Opera and Song Collective (TOSC) presents Stormlight — Contemporary Voices\, a programme bringing together established and emerging artists in a celebration of contemporary music\, with the emphasis on Australian composers and new vocal works. \nCurated by Jill Sullivan\, the programme includes scenes from Tristan Entwistle’s new opera Much Ado About Nothing\, Michael Lampard’s At the Harbour’s Edge\, works by David Tunley\, Nigel McDougall and Christine Draeger\, alongside music by Ross Edwards\, Kaija Saariaho and Thomas Pasatieri. \nJill Sullivan says “Every generation has something to say\, and every generation deserves to be heard. The great composers we treasure today were once contemporary voices themselves\, inspired by the world around them.” \n“Stormlight celebrates that continuing creative spirit through music inspired by nature\, poetry\, Shakespeare and the human condition.\nYet another story runs through this programme: the remarkable threads of friendship\, family\, mentorship and artistic collaboration that connect our composers and performers. Teachers and students\, parents and children\, old friends and new colleagues come together\, sometimes through unexpected connections spanning generations and continents. These are the circles of life that sustain music\, passing inspiration from one generation to another. Today we celebrate not only new music\, but the human relationships that bring it to life.” \nPerformers include sopranos Samanta Lestavel and Leah Thomas\, mezzo-soprano Jill Sullivan\, tenors Matthew Gaskin and Michael Kaufmann\, baritones Tristan Entwistle\, Michael Lampard\, James Pinneri and Dale Schilling. Accompanying the singers will be flautists Christine Draeger and Philip Murray and pianists Bradley Gilchrist and Claire Howard. \nOne of TOSC’s central aims is to provide opportunities for singers and composers to explore repertoire that deserves to be heard more widely\, while continuing to develop the artistic life of our local musical community.

SUMMARY:Horizon Classical presents Rapture & Ruin
DESCRIPTION:Horizon Classical presents Rapture & Ruin — an immersive orchestral evening built around Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2\, performed by Australian pianist Calvin Abdiel with conductor Hans Sangtoki and Horizon Orchestral Studio. \nRapture. Ruin. Release. — Beauty that breaks you. \nThree Russian masters. One evening. Rapture & Ruin traces the emotional arc of the Romantic imagination — from Glinka’s\nexhilarating Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla and Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture to Romeo and Juliet culminating in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No 2 written on the other side of failure\, still unmatched for sheer emotional reach. \nHorizon Orchestral Studio is an emerging artistic development platform dedicated to forming conductors\, musicians\, and audiences through orchestral experiences rooted in mentorship\, responsibility\, artistic excellence\, and cultural leadership. Designed to bridge the gap between advanced training and professional practice\, Horizon creates real rehearsal and performance opportunities for emerging conductors while presenting ambitious public performances that invite audiences into the depth\, beauty\, and emotional power of orchestral music. \nCONDUCTOR Hans Sangtoki/ Calvin Abdiel\, piano\nP R O G R A M M E: GLINKA Ruslan and Ludmilla — Overture/ TCHAIKOVSKY Romeo and Juliet — Fantasy Overture/ RACHMANINOFF Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor\, Op. 18 \nRead our review of Horizon Classical’s last concert.

SUMMARY:Sydney Chamber Choir Presents In Paradisum
DESCRIPTION:Sydney Chamber Choir invites you to In Paradisum\, a concert of rare beauty and intensity that offers reflection\, consolation and light. \nThis rich tapestry of choral music performed in the warm acoustic of St James’ King St\, is designed to let the sounds of Estonian\, Nordic and Australian composers unfold with beautiful resonance. \nAt the heart of the concert is Galina Grigorjeva’s In Paradisum\, music of luminous simplicity whose floating lines seem to suspend time itself. Sacred reflections continue in Edvard Grieg’s Ave Maris Stella\, radiant and gently lyrical\, and Knut Nystedt’s profound Stabat Mater\, a work of stark intensity and quiet anguish. From Arvo Pärt\, the choir performs Bogoroditse Dyevo — music of crystalline clarity that distils ancient texts into moments of piercing stillness. \nNorthern voices are also heard in Jan Sandström’s Det är en Ros Utsprungen (Lo\, How a Rose E’er Blooming)\, where traditional melody is suspended inside glowing modern harmonies\, and Sven-David Sandström’s Four Songs of Love\, a tender exploration of love in its many forms. The program turns to nature and memory in Veljo Tormis’s Autumn Landscapes\, music that feels elemental and rooted in the rhythms of the land. Urmas Sisask’s Benedictio brings a sense of celestial wonder\, while contemporary Australian voices are represented by Anne Cawrse’s The Greatest of These and Joe Twist’s Lament — each offering a distinct and deeply personal response to themes of loss\, tenderness and hope. \nFor the Nystedt and Twist\, the choir is delighted to be joined by acclaimed cellist Julian Smiles. \nBookings \nThis program will also be presented in Goulburn\, at the Hume Conservatorium of Music on 23 May.

SUMMARY:River City Voices presents Faurés Requiem
DESCRIPTION:River City Voices presents Faurés Requiem\, an inspirational concert offering an evening of luminous music that speaks to comfort\, renewal\, and quiet strength through the transcendent power of the human voice. \nAt the heart of the program is the timeless Requiem in D minor composed in 1890 by Gabriel Fauré\, a masterpiece loved for its serenity and radiant hope. Rich textures\, expressive solos\, and the warmth of blended voices promise an experience that resonates long after the final note fades. \nThis concert also features complementary choral works that echo the message of harmony and reflection\, including Holy Dreaming by Australian composer Alice Chance\, Geistliches Lied\, Op. 30 by Johannes Brahms (sung in German); Ave verum corpus by Franz Liszt (sung in Latin); The Lord’s Prayer (ed. 2025) by Australian composer Joseph Romeo and Padla by First Nations composer Nicole Smede. \nBookings \nDuration: approx. 70 minutes \nTickets: Adult $60\, Concession $45\, Young Classic (full-time student under 30) $30\, Child (under 18) $18 (a booking fee applies) \nImage credit Grant Leslie
