SUMMARY:Selby & Friends presents Jewels in the Crown
DESCRIPTION:Selby & Friends presents Jewels in the Crown\, a program of glorious chamber music by Bartók\, Beethoven and Brahms in their July tour to Sydney\, Melbourne\, Canberra\, Adelaide\, the NSW Southern Highlands\, and Turramurra. \nArtistic Director and pianist Kathryn Selby welcomes special Australian guest artists\, the brilliant and virtuosic violinist Natalie Chee and acclaimed clarinettist and mentor Lloyd Van’t Hoff. The four works to be performed showcase the clarinet\, the violin and the piano at their most subtle\, sublime and virtuosic. \nBeginning with Brahms’ second clarinet sonata composed towards the very end of his life\, a performance by the renowned German clarinettist Richard Mühlfield so inspired Brahms that he composed his four final works\, all featuring the clarinet\, of which this sonata is a masterpiece. \nThis is followed by a new arrangement by young Australian composer Andrew Howes of the Six Romanian Dances by Bartók. A staple for all young pianists\, the dances are a joy to hear in this trio version. Contrasts closes the first half – another work inspired by great performers. Commissioned by Benny Goodman and Joseph Szigeti\, Bartok capitalized on the differences between the instruments and thus – contrasts. This is a highly virtuosic and exciting work and is incredibly important in the chamber music genre. \nWe close the concert with arguably the greatest sonata for violin and piano by Beethoven – again composed for a great performer\, namely the exotic and virtuosic George Bridgetower. The Kreutzer Sonata was so different to Beethoven’s previous eight violin sonatas that he himself wrote on the title page that it was almost a concerto for both instruments. \n“Jewels in the Crown” tour dates and direct links below: \nSunday\, 7 July: Adelaide @ 2:15pm – Elder Hall at the University of Adelaide \nMonday\, 8 July: Sydney @ 7:00pm – City Recital Hall \nWednesday\, 10 July: Melbourne @ 2:00pm – Primrose Potter Salon\, Melbourne Recital Centre \nWednesday\, 10 July: Melbourne @ 7:00pm – Primrose Potter Salon\, Melbourne Recital Centre \nFriday\, 12 July: Canberra @ 7:00pm – NGA James Fairfax Theatre \nSaturday\, 13 July: Bowral\, NSW Southern Highlands @ 4:00pm – Bowral Memorial Hall \nSunday\, 14 July: Turramurra @ 2:15pm – Turramurra Uniting Church
