Hurricane Transcriptions / Laborintus II
American rock legends Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, and Mike Patton of Faith No More perform separate
works on the same bill in Hurricane Transcriptions / Laborintus II.
Sonic Youth co-founder and revered guitarist Lee Ranaldo presents the Australian premiere of his new work
Hurricane Transcriptions (Last Night on Earth), a piece composed in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which
blew through New York in 2012.
Hurricane Transcriptions was commissioned by Sydney Festival, Holland Festival and Stargaze.
In the second performance of the night Mike Patton tackles Luciano Berio’s 1965 composition Laborintus II, a montage of spoken word, extravagant instrumentation and electronics. Written to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the birth of Italian poet Dante Alighieri, this uncompromising piece incorporates avant garde jazz, eerie arrangements and chaotic noise.
Laborintus II will feature Patton as MC, at times singing and narrating in Italian (a one-time resident of Bologna, he speaks Italian fluently). Patton is joined by Ensemble Offspring and The Song Company under the direction of Roland Peelman to present this remarkable work.
