In their final subscription concert for the year, the\u00a0Choir of St James\u2019 King Street will be joined by mezzo-soprano Sally- Anne Russell to perform\u00a0 Life\u2019s Journey –<\/em>\u00a0music about life, death, and everything in between.<\/p>\n The programme represents a break from the usual style of the\u00a0choir.\u00a0It focuses on\u00a0secular\u00a0works of the 20th and 21st centuries, especially, the music of Eric Whitacre, the American choral composer and conductor who is enjoying spectacular popularity.\u00a0Many of\u00a0his works like\u00a0\u00a0A Boy and a Girl<\/em>, Hope,<\/em> Faith, Life, Love <\/em>and Sleep<\/em>, are\u00a0settings of poems about everyday life.<\/p>\n Head of music at St James’ King Street and conductor of the choir, Warren Trevelyan-Jones observes that “The 20th<\/sup> Century saw huge developments in choral music, and opened up enormous possibilities for groups of voices. Many of the works in this program reflect on the recurring problems of life, in a completely modern style, but maintain a sense of beauty and thoughtfulness in the music.\u201d<\/p>\n Warren\u00a0Trevelyan-Jones was a Lay Vicar in the Choir of Westminster Abbey, London prior to moving to Australia. In 2001 he co-founded\u00a0the group Ensemble Plus Ultra<\/em> with Michael Noone and has been performing with them as well as being\u00a0involved with\u00a0its administration and direction.\u00a0Ensemble Plus Ultra’s\u00a0<\/em>\u00a010 CD recording\u00a0of the\u00a0music\u00a0by Tomas Luis\u00a0Victoria on the\u00a0Archiv label, won the 2012 Gramophone Award for early music. In 2008,\u00a0he co-\u00a0founded The Consort of Melbourne <\/em>and has directed them in a series of concerts at the new Melbourne Recital Centre and for Music Viva Australia.<\/p>\n
