Listening to El\u012bna Garan\u010da’s latest CD is a supremely gratifying experience. Released by Deutsche Grammophon (DG 479 0071), Romantique <\/em>is\u00a0a\u00a0collection of 9 opera arias\u00a0performed by the Latvian lyric mezzo –\u00a0soprano with the Filharmonica del Tetro Comunale di Bologna conducted by Yves Abel.<\/p>\n The arias\u00a0on this CD (her 5th solo album), are owned by heroines of 19th century opera. This is not a populist collection. Rather, it is informed\u00a0repertoire\u00a0that is perfectly suited to\u00a0her voice at this point in her career and which she performs with complete mastery. The power of her voice is\u00a0ever present\u00a0 along with flawless technique, silken tone and a glorious range.<\/p>\n The arias, mostly sung in French are\u00a0rarely heard gems\u00a0from the bel canto <\/em>and dramatic repertoire.\u00a0 Three arias from Gounod feature on the recording:\u00a0O ma lyre<\/em> immortelle<\/em> from Sapho,\u00a0<\/em>Faites-lui mes aveux<\/em> from Faust <\/em>and\u00a0Plus grand dans son obscurit\u00e9 <\/em>from La Reine de saba;\u00a0<\/em><\/em>Tchaikovsky\u2019s Joan of Arc (The Maid of Orl\u00e9ans<\/em>) and Saint-Saens’ <\/strong>Mon coeur s’ouvre \u00e0 ta voix <\/em>from Samson et Dalila\u00a0<\/em>provide moments of intense drama with more bel canto<\/em> arias from\u00a0Donizetti Oh! Mon Fernand<\/em> from La Favorite,<\/em> Lalo’s De tous cot\u00e9s…lorsque je\u00a0t’ai vu soudain <\/em>from Le Roi d’Ys <\/em>and even Vaccai\u00a0\u00a0Giulietta! Oh, mia Giulietta\u2026Ah, se tu dormi<\/em> from Giulietta e Romeo.<\/em><\/p>\n Born in Riga, in 1976,\u00a0El\u012bna Garan\u010da came to international attention in the final of the 2001 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Appearances\u00a0in the opera houses of Europe followed, singing roles like Rosina, Cherubino, Orlofsky and Dorabella at the Vienna State Opera, Theatre an der Wein, Frankfurt, Salzburg and Paris. She made her Covent Garden debut as Dorabella in 2007 and at The Met in 2008 as Rosina.<\/p>\n The\u00a0arias she sings on Romantique, <\/em>are roles she has\u00a0yet to\u00a0perform on stage.
