Mexican-born tenor Rolando Villazon’s return to singing after a hiatus due to throat surgery has been welcomed by his followers.<\/span><\/p>\n After an absence of some three years from the recording scene, Villazon has released\u00a0a solo\u00a0CD Villazon Verdi <\/em>singing the\u00a0repertoire he does best.\u00a0<\/em>Released in November 2012. (DG 477 9460), the studio recording was made in Milan in September 2012 with the Orchestra and Choir of the Teatro Regio Torino,\u00a0conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, and includes\u00a0solo contributions from soprano Mojca Erdmann and tenor Vicente Ombuena.<\/p>\n The collection of 15 arias spans\u00a0compositions from Verdi’s first (Oberto,<\/em> his\u00a0debut opera) to his final works (Requiem<\/em> and Falstaff). <\/em>It’s strength\u00a0lies not just\u00a0in\u00a0mixing the popular (La donna e mobile<\/em> and Lunge da lei…) <\/em>with the more esoteric operatic repertoire,\u00a0(Eccomi prigioniero<\/em> from I Corsaro), <\/em>but in the inclusion of\u00a0three\u00a0rarely heard cameos from Verdi’s songs for voice and piano, and the anguished Ingemisco<\/em> from the Requiem, <\/em>Verdi’s monumental sacred work. <\/em>The three songs, Brindisi, L’esule <\/em>and In solitaria stanza\u00a0<\/em>are\u00a0Berio’s orchestrations.\u00a0The diversion\u00a0from an all-opera Verdi CD makes for\u00a0a welcome variation in interest and a demonstration of\u00a0Verdi’s\u00a0and Villazon’s breadth of style.<\/p>\n Villazon’s voice is magnificent and\u00a0he sings\u00a0powerfully throughout his range\u00a0with the\u00a0myriad\u00a0significant demands of\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0 repertoire,\u00a0 delivering drama with\u00a0shimmering cadenzas, extrovert passion\u00a0and\u00a0slower introspective passages.\u00a0The orchestra sounds fabulous and the\u00a0musical direction is supportive and elastic.<\/p>\n Recent stage appearances by Villazon\u00a0include\u00a0Rodolfo at the Royal Opera Covent Garden in December 2012 and\u00a0in January 2013, his role debut as the title character of Mozart’s Lucio Silla<\/em>\u00a0in Salzburg, conducted by Marc Minkowski\u00a0with Les Musiciens du Louvre.\u00a0He sings in La Traviata<\/em> at the Vienna State Opera in March; he has Mozart’s Requiem lined up with the\u00a0Berlin Philharmonie\u00a0in \u00a0April, L’elisir d’amore<\/em> in Barcelona in\u00a0May-June and\u00a0a reprise of Lucio Silla<\/em> at the Salzburg Festival in July – August.
