Come along to The Opera Centre for a sneak peak at the production of Opera Australia\u2019s The Force of Destiny<\/em>, which opens at the Sydney Opera House on 29 June.<\/p>\n

Directed by Tama Matheson, the production features soprano Svetla Vassileva, who portrays Leonora in her Opera Australia debut. Acclaimed tenor Riccardo Massi plays Don Alvaro while bass Giacomo Prestia also makes his Sydney Opera House debut. They are joined by many of the company\u2019s best-loved singers, including Jonathan Summers, Warwick Fyfe and Kanen Breen.<\/p>\n

The dramatic production will involve a giant human skull, a chorus draped in black veils and wearing skull masks, candle-lit interiors and earthy exteriors that change in the blink of an eye. Welcome to director Tama Matheson\u2019s mainstage opera debut and what promises to be a thrilling version of Verdi\u2019s classic opera of vendetta, elopement, love, vengeance and doom.<\/p>\n

The overture is among Verdi\u2019s best, an exciting prelude to a plot replete with chaotic events, passionate characters and many a coincidence that takes them to boiling point. Mark Thompson\u2019s stunning set and richly-detailed costumes conjure a dark, expressive landscape where death stalks the stage. The glory of war is undercut in a shattering climax of strident, resonating power.<\/p>\n
