May 1787 , and the First Fleet is ready to sail from England.\u00a0 Richard Morgan’s safe and respectable middle-class existence is shattered. He may as well be crossing into Hades as he endures the ocean journey to the colony of New South Wales.<\/p>\n

Colleen McCullough’s\u00a0 tale of Richard Morgan in her\u00a0novel “Morgan’s Run<\/em>“,\u00a0has been transformed into a musical.by composer\u00a0Gavin Lockley, with the libretto by the author herself.\u00a0 As he \u00a0journeys into the unknown,\u00a0Morgan discovers not only new depths of physical suffering and mental anguish, but also new powers of endurance and strength of character and feeling.<\/p>\n

As the First Fleet was setting sail,\u00a0\u00a0across the channel in Europe, Mozart was\u00a0composing his opera\u00a0 “Don Giovanni”.<\/em> Lockley used this classical aesthetic to\u00a0inspire the\u00a0score\u00a0, which\u00a0he says is “a pastiche – a musical with a classical aesthetic”.\u00a0 The cast of 32 will be joined by band that includes a small classical orchestra, a harpsichord, and…wait for it…a rock drum kit.<\/p>\n

To absorb the spirit of Richard Morgan, Lockley spent most of 2010 with Colleen McCullough on Norfolk Island,\u00a0 home to the penal colony\u00a0to which\u00a0Morgan was dispatched. Lockley’s previous works The Symphony of Australia <\/em>and Ballads of the Bush <\/em>have sought to express the history and essence of\u00a0\u00a0the nation and create a distinctive national musical heritage. Whilst Ballads of the Bush\u00a0sets<\/em> popular Australian verse to music,\u00a0 and the Symphony of Australia <\/em>celebrates a nation, Morgan’s Run <\/em>is a narrative about the founding of a nation and its character.<\/p>\n

“Morgan’s Run” <\/em>is on at the Springwood Civic Centre, Springwood. There are 8 performances at 2 pm and 8 pm over three weekends, Saturdays and Sundays May 21st and 22nd, \u00a0May 28th, 29th, \u00a0June 4th and 5th.<\/p>\n
