{"id":1323,"date":"2011-04-18T23:45:10","date_gmt":"2011-04-18T13:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=1323"},"modified":"2011-04-18T23:45:10","modified_gmt":"2011-04-18T13:45:10","slug":"good-friday-fare-pergolesi-and-stainer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=1323","title":{"rendered":"Good Friday fare: Pergolesi and Stainer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1331\" href=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/shows\/good-friday-fare-pergolesi-and-stainer\/1323.html\/attachment\/wagg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1331\" title=\"Wagg\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Wagg-100x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Two powerful images from the events of Good Friday\u00a0at Calvary, are brought together in music on Good Friday, 22nd April when\u00a0 Pergolesi&#8217;s <em>Stabat Mater\u00a0is <\/em>performed alongside\u00a0Stainers&#8217;<em>\u00a0 Crucifixion,<\/em>\u00a0 at St Stephen&#8217;s Church, in Macquarie Street, Sydney.\u00a0\u00a0Pergolesi&#8217;s\u00a0work paints the grieving mother whilst Stainer&#8217;s\u00a0depicts the object of her grief &#8211;\u00a0 the crucifixion death of her Son.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the two works couldn&#8217;t be more diverse. Pergolesi&#8217;s motet for soprano and alto soloists with continuo\u00a0is written in Italian Baroque style with a distinct sense of drama.\u00a0Composed in 1736, it was\u00a0composed as\u00a0Pergolesi was dying, prematurely, aged 26.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Stainer&#8217;s <em>Crucifixion,<\/em> written in 1887 when Stainer was 47<em>,<\/em>\u00a0is more English oratorio\u00a0than Baroque motet,\u00a0 with 20 movements and scored for tenor and bass soloists, SATB choir and organ.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Realising this programme will be conductor Anthony Pasquill, with soprano Judith Rough, mezzo soprano Amanda Wagg,\u00a0tenor Roy Best,\u00a0bass Gavin Lockley and the choir of St Stephen&#8217;s\u00a0augmented by\u00a0members of several Sydney Parish Choirs.
