In the intimate setting of the Sydney Philharmonia\u00a0space at The Wharf, soprano Jane Sheldon and the Acacia Quartet launched their recent CD North+South, <\/em>recorded with harpist Genevieve Lang,\u00a0in an\u00a0evening of stories in music as Acacia also performed two\u00a0works for string quartet\u00a0composed\u00a0by\u00a0Lyle Chan.<\/p>\n Now based in the US,\u00a0Jane Sheldon\u00a0\u00a0sang a selection of 10 folk songs from Australia, the US and the British Isles,\u00a0\u00a0couched in arrangements by a range of composers who included Andrew Ford, Dan Walker, Elena Kats-Chernin, Anne Carr-Boyd, Martin Wesley-Smith and\u00a0Sheldon herself. There were\u00a0a capella\u00a0arrangements as well as\u00a0those with various combination of strings. Sheldon’s purity of tone and\u00a0straight from the heart\u00a0delivery\u00a0gave perfect expression to the likes of I Never Will Marry, Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier <\/em>and Tommy Tanna<\/em>.<\/p>\n The Acacia Quartet, violinists Lisa Stewart and Myee Clohessy,\u00a0cellist Anna Martin-Scrase and violist Stefan Duwe,\u00a0fresh from working with conductor composer Eric Whitacre,\u00a0played with precision and\u00a0sensitivity for the solo voice,\u00a0creating a\u00a0string sound that\u00a0enriched the folk elements of the songs,\u00a0moving to\u00a0more dramatic\u00a0\u00a0textures as the narratives changed.<\/p>\n Lyle Chan’s two works, Night Vigil<\/em> (1993\/2013) and Don’t Leave Me This Way<\/em> (1995\/2010) express his intensely personal memoirs of working as an AIDS activist and\u00a0are dedicated to two friends who\u00a0 died from the syndrome. Lyle Chan was on hand to speak of how his works took shape, commenting that\u00a0he was ‘deeply honoured that Acacia have embraced\u00a0(his) works.”<\/p>\n North + South\u00a0is dstributed by Planet<\/a>.
